Experienced Orthopedic Surgeon Chooses Country Lifestyle Over Big City Stress

11/9/2009 - Experienced Orthopedic Surgeon Chooses Country Lifestyle Over Big City Stress

Introducing Dr. Scott Gherini, Orthopedic Surgeon

After living in Sacramento for years, a successful orthopedic surgeon had an awakening two years ago. Thus began his search for a new place to live and a new way of living. Dr. Scott Gherini’s enlightenment led him to Ukiah, where he recently set up a new medical practice revolving around his passion: hip and knee surgery and helping those with orthopedic conditions—regardless of their ability to pay.

“I realized that greed is a disease, and the more you get, the worse the disease gets,” he said. “I’ve done more than 2000 surgical hip and knee replacements and revisions. It’s what I love to do and what I’m good at.” So, he said, he decided to focus on his practice away from the distractions and pressures of a big city, and just take care of people.

When Dr. Gherini began looking for a place to move, he spoke with his friend anesthesiologist Dr. Rick Lodge, who moved from Sacramento to Ukiah a few years ago. Dr. Lodge encouraged Dr. Gherini to consider Ukiah.

“Rick said Ukiah’s a great town with a great hospital community, so I decided to check it out,” he said. Dr. Gherini is athletic and energetic, and he enjoys the outdoors. When he saw Ukiah, he knew he could enjoy his time away from the office, hiking through redwoods or enjoying Lake Mendocino. Then, he toured the hospital and met several members of the medical staff, and he knew his time at work would match his goal of providing high quality medicine with an excellent staff and state-of-the-art equipment.

“I chose Ukiah Valley Medical Center because, in the age of computers, I can work in a place where I can stay connected, practice good medicine, breathe fresh air and never deal with traffic,” he said.

Dr. Gherini will share office space with fellow orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian Cable. Dr. Gherini will also spend several hours a week working with fellow orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ken Hoek at Mendocino Community Health Clinic and assist the Ukiah Valley Medical Center Emergency Department by making himself available to care for emergency patients.

“We are so pleased to have Dr. Gherini join us. He is an excellent surgeon and a great fit for our medical staff,” said Chief of Staff Dr. Dale Morrison.

Dr. Gherini did his undergraduate work at Stanford University; then received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati. He completed an internship and residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and a fellowship in total joint reconstruction at Joint Implant Surgery/Ohio State University. Dr. Gherini is board certified and has been in private practice since 1989.
